Lower back pain can be sudden onset and severe, or it can persist for a long time, increasing and decreasing. The source of lower back pain can be various structures such as the disc tissue between the vertebrae, posterior facet joints, ligaments surrounding the vertebrae, muscles supporting the spine, spinal cord and nerve roots.
